In March 2025, the LISTEN project carried out a ground-breaking participatory assessment across Central Macedonia, Greece. Four localised events were held in Serres, Katerini, Thessaloniki, and Polykastro. Designed and implemented by Light Trees in collaboration with SEERC, these sessions spotlighted the strengths and struggles of grassroots organisations working on the frontlines of community support.
Key findings reveal the vital role of small, community-driven initiatives in addressing social exclusion, youth outmigration, and the integration of migrants and refugees. From women’s cooperatives reviving local heritage to cultural centres supporting refugee education, local groups showcased innovation, resilience, and strong community ties—despite persistent challenges such as limited funding, volunteer burnout, and bureaucratic hurdles.
The assessment underscores the urgent need for sustained political support, equitable funding, and inclusive policies to empower these organisations.
